Facts and Figures

  • Official name: The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Location: 11 degrees north latitude and 60 degrees west longitude, or about 21 miles (34 km) from its sister island, Trinidad, and about 10 miles (16 km) from Venezuela.
  • Size: 116 sq. miles (300 sq. km).
  • Highest point: 1,890 feet (573 m).
  • Tobago Capital: Scarborough (with a population of just over 1000).
  • Population: about 1.3 million.
  • Government: Trinidad and Tobago became a fully democratic republic state in 1976. Tobago is a semi- autonomous state governed by the Tobago House of Assembly, which was established since 1980. Local elections in Tobago take place every four years.
  • Official Language: English. Locals in Tobago also use a Creole dialect, which is a mélange of patois and extracts from our Amerindian ancestors and early European inhabitants, especially the French and Dutch.
  • People: About 90% of the local population is of African descent, with the remainder being made up of people of East Indian, Chinese and Syrian descent.
  • Time zone: Atlantic Standard Time, or one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.
  • Climate: Tobago has a tropical marine climate with constant cool breezes from trade winds and year-round temperatures ranging from 73 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 32 degrees Celsius). The first six months of the year are the dry season; the second are the rainier periods of the year.
  • Water temperature: Summer’s high is 82 F (28 C), winter’s lows are 78 F (26 C) in January and February.
  • Airport: Crown Point International Airport (Tobago); Piarco International Airport (Trinidad)
  • Getting Here: Caribbean Airlines provides an hourly 20-minute shuttle to Tobago from Trinidad each day. Trinidad is served from North American gateways by most major airlines. There is also a very modern catamaran fast ferry that transports passengers as well as vehicles between Trinidad and Tobago. Operated by the Port Authority of Trinidad & Tobago, this is an easy 2 ½-hour cruise, complete with restaurant and bar facilities.
  • Entry requirements: All visitors must have valid passports for the full length of their stay. Visas are not needed by Americans.
  • Transportation: Rental cars, taxis and minibuses are all available; remember to drive on the left side of the road.
  • Money: Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TT$); the exchange rate is about TT$6.30 to the U.S. dollar (as of August 2015). Major credit cards are generally accepted.
  • Time Zone: Eastern Standard. Daylight-saving not observed.
